If your role requires supporting SQL Server Databases you need to understand where to look and what to look for. Depending on whether your SQL database is hosted on-prem, in Azure SQL or Fabric, there are some differences in what tools are available. Kubernetes turned 10 years old yesterday! I'm very glad I was able to participate in the after-work kubernetes meetup "KuberTENes Birthday Bash Munich" organized by Max Körbächer to celebrate this exceptional date! Next to a lot of cool stickers, a t-shirt raffle and "curry wurst" , I got the chance to meet some great engineers and learn more about Wasm and the inner workings of kubernetes sig (special interest groups). Mario Fahlandt with his talk "How works the infrastructure for the infrastructure? A view into Kubernetes’ inner workings." provided some great insights into the work of the kubernetes maintainers and I learned for example that registry.k8s.io is now hosted on AWS. He also provided some insights into their build organization around their Cicd tool " prow". For those curious ones, checkout https://lnkd.in/dEcp6fCu Also he shared an interesting anecdote: Last week the kubernetes X/Twitter account was suspended and they just got it unlocked again. The reason: They actually thought it's a nice idea to set the accounts birthday to the original kubernetes date of birth. Sadly X does not allow 10 year olds on their platform 😄 David Leitner with his talk "Containerless Kubernetes in a Multi-Cloud World" clearly pointed out the superiority of web assembly over containers in many area. Things I got out of this talk and the following discussions with attendees: - kcp: https://lnkd.in/dr7NyQaP a kubernetes variant for running wasm - https://wasmcloud.com/ a wasm orchestration layer worth having a look at Also some things i learned about WASM in later discussions: - small binaries: quick transfers, quick startup - security by default: everything the binary is allowed to do needs to be implemented and enabled first, quite an advantage in comparison to kubernetes wide open default permissions - since it is so small and has quick startup, an application can be separated in individual parts that are only started up if needed. Interesting first episode of a miniseries on the AWS podcast, "the frugal architect". It's got Werner in it and who doesn't like Werner? Really interesting hearing WeTransfer talking about how they over-engineered their storage deduplication in a way that cost them money, writing a complex framework that didn't apply to most content, and was silently unreliable due to that complexity and a lack of observability. They'd over-optimised the algorithm, skimping on the reliability, and the upfront data to justify that clever de-duplication. I am only too guilty of "I THOUGHT OF A GREAT THING" but every thing has an opportunity cost in development or a sunk cost in the ongoing support needed. Is the 1% optimisation you can achieve the right thing to do, at this moment in time? It might be later. It might be now. It might have made sense 5 months ago, but maybe it never makes sense. I remember this in an application where we needed to terminate our own TLS to do authentication. While the idea of using a lets encrypt certificate was compelling, because it was free - the orchestration to actually fetch and store that certificate securely (not done by the front-end workers) was going to take way more time and the 150 quid that the registrar would charge... And that was sad, but the right thing to do. I will never deny that it's all too easy to spend a lot of money very quickly with AWS or other SASS services - or that sometimes self-hosting is the right option (but one I'll generally shy away from). But (cliched Pareto principle inbound), often a few things are the biggest costs, and they often have non-coding interventions: changing S3 storage policies, looking right-sizing instances/scaling policies. Sometimes the even small code changes can be consequential, e.g. logging just a little bit less on a heavily used function. You gotta give your teams a little space to find those quick wins and to take them. You want to make them feel empowered to cut those costs and not just go "well our AWS bill has always been the biggest of the org" and shrug their shoulders... As with so many things wrongly labelled "technical debt", it's easy to be overwhelmed by a situation and disengage as the challenge seems too big. A little better is still better. And if you cut ongoing spending, you get that little bit extra every month.
